MEDIAS - 2009

From 11 to 14 May, 2009 in Limassol (Cyprus) was held the II International Conference MEDIAS 2009, organised by the Mediterranean Institute of Applied Sciences, Cyprus (MEDIAPS) and the Institute for Computing in Physics and Technology, Russia (ICPT), supported by the Russian Foundation for Basic Research (RFBR), LANIT company, as well as the Association of Russian businessmen in Cyprus.

Conference MEDIAS - 2009 was devoted to topical questions of computer science as an interdisciplinary field of knowledge at the intersection of human and technological cultures, modern technology of virtual reality and synthetic worlds as a new way of interaction between man and computer systems that provide, among other things, a fundamentally new quality of perception of the real world.

At the opening of the conference were made by the Mayor of Limassol Andreas Christ, Director of MEDIAPS Sergei Prokhorov, Director of ICPT Professor Stanislav Klimenko, pilots-cosmonauts Yuri Baturin, Alexander Serebrov, Talgat Musabayev, professors and associate professors from leading Russian universities. The plenary session heard the report of the Head of the UNESCO Chair on Copyright and other intellectual property rights of Professor Mikhail Fedotov on the new priorities of UNITWIN / UNESCO Chairs. Conference participants were invited to reflect on the question of the establishment of the UNESCO Chair on Informatics based on MEDIAPS and ICPT.
Executive Director of the Mediterranean Institute of Applied Sciences Sergei Prokhorov, spoke about the development plans of the Institute, thanked the Cypriot colleagues for positive attitude and invaluable assistance in the establishment of a joint Cypriot-Russian educational programs under the auspices of MEDIAPS.

Director of Institute for Computing in Physics and Technology Professor Stanislav Klimenko spoke about the history of technology development of virtual environment. Systems of a virtual environment, according to Professor Klimenko, are the most natural and promising direction of development of man-machine interface. On the one hand, they allow the harmonious use computing resources and the CPU and video card, on the other - to «turn on» user's associative and shape perception of information along with the logic. The advent of affordable stereoscopic screens makes the inevitable widespread use of technologies of virtual environments for scientific and educational practice in the near future.
The most important direction of development of modern science is to develop a theoretical framework and to demonstrate the feasibility of new principles of working with distributed in space and time information - neogeography and Situational Awareness. Integration opportunities neogeography and Situational Awareness and the modern technology of information visualisation is an important direction in the development of management systems.

The report of Professor Valentina Dmitrieva addressed to the problems of education neogeography - specific questions the perception of complex geospatial information by professionals who are accustomed to work with the indirect conditionality of information that are rapidly becoming a serious problem.

Professor Yuri Baturin - deputy commander of Cosmonauts Detachment stressed the need for the synthesis of human and technical education in the contemporary higher education based on new approaches to science.
The author of the famous "Lessons from Space" professor, cosmonaut Alexander Serebrov payed attention to the importance of the introduction of virtual environments technology for environmental education in school and university. By tradition, "Lessons from Space" have been supplemented by lessons on the Earth. Cosmonaut Yuri Baturin and Alexander Serebrov attended Foley's school, where study the representatives of 47 nationalities and answered on the numerous questions of pupils.

The Chairman of the National Space Agency of the Republic of Kazakhstan cosmonaut, professor Talgat Musabayev, in his speech expressed the interest of Kazakhstan in the development of international cooperation in education and science.

Students and graduate students who participated in the conference, was met with great interest the report of Professor Yuri Smetanina about operating in the Russian Foundation for Basic Research programs of support for young scientists.

Professor Alexander Zhdanov, the head of the "adaptive management" section of the conference, presented a report which showed that the adaptive control system - is the next stage of development of control theory, which inevitably comes to replace the era of optimization of management.

Presentations were made by prominent representatives of Russian science professor Lev Stolyarov, Michael Mikhaylyuk, Lyudmila Massel, Aleksey Yurasov and others.

Students and post-graduates of Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology presented research reports on the works carried out in preparation for Masters degrees and PhD theses. The conference noted the high level of student reports, the importance of holding such events for the education of young researchers and exchange of experiences between the generations and academic schools.
